Cryostasis Review
Monday, May 4th, 2009Developed by 1C, Cryostasis is first-person shooter that takes the breath away from the audience with an extremely intense atmospheric environment which is unlike most first-person shooters. Cryostasis starts the player off laying in the beating snow in the Arctic where the player is unaware about what exactly happened to the character, the player is channelled in and through a crashed Russian ice breaker, the ship as you can imagine is in sparkling frozen state. You adventure though the hull of this mighty ship unaware of what to expect and on the way the plot seems to steadily unravel itself as the character experiences flashbacks which start to explain how the current scene was formed.
This is very interesting as it’s one of its kind and should be given a great deal of respect as a lot of thought must have gone into this game, although playing the game at some points I see other games in Cryostasis such as the well known and successful games that are S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Dead Space as the graphics in Cryostasis seem to be similar to that of S.T.A.L.K.E.R and the atmospheric audio of Dead Space. This isn’t a bad thing because I love both of these games and taking a bit out of them shows that they are taking in inspiration, changing it to fit in with the game.
After the plot starts to unravel the FPS side of the game starts to come out as you start to learn what happened to the crew and you start to fight them in an interesting way. You start off with hand-to-hand combat and an unusual control system because the player has to use the movement keys to operate how the character punches, for example to use your right fist you use the move right key and the attack button at the same time like wise with the left and you can start to form combo’s which make fighting much more interesting. After a few minutes you start to gain weapons that you pick up which make your hand attacks stronger.
The health system, this is a whole new functionality and an interesting change from the traditional health bar, the health just seems to be warmth, internally and externally.
To gain health you just have to simply find a heat source where your character can heat up by simply putting his hands over the heat, whilst this being very simple, it feels too easy and needs a bit more of a challenge.
I do like this game, however it is very repetitive and seems to become less thrilling as the game progresses and the plot still doesn’t make complete sense. So to conclude this is game is interesting and worth checking out but don’t expect something huge.
